How Have Hospitals Navigated Investment Risks
Compare the results of your hospital's investments to your peer group by using statistics from our exclusive, proprietary database of hospital investment practices. The data and trend information are compiled from the AHA's annual survey, Hospital & Multi-Hospital System Investment Practices, including corporate and retirement asset types and sizes, as well as hospital foundations and endowments. The presentation will also address the implications of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act and the Patriot Act. Access to Capital in the New Millenium For Health Care Organizations
The credit market for tax-exempt bonds issued by health care organizations has turned bearish. Access to capital is declining while the cost of capital increases. Bond rating downgrades by rating agencies outnumber upgrades by a margin of 5 to 1. The operating margins, liquidity, accounts receivable and other key financial indicators of many health care organizations are eroding. And with the downturn in the stock market, their excess margins have also been weakened. This presentation will help attendees understand current trends in the financial performance of health care organizations, how bond rating agencies view health care debt, and what you can do to impact your organization's bond rating. It will include long-term and short-term perspectives on how to maintain access to capital.

Capital Allocation - Rethinking Our Approach To Project Decision Making
Fortune 100 companies have used corporate finance as a means to enhance project capital decision making for many years. The use of these techniques as the foundation for capital allocation has enabled these companies to focus strategic management decisions on the creation of ongoing corporate value. The principles of corporate finance-based capital allocation are directly applicable to health care organizations of all types. With the impacts of regulatory changes and market competition making the implications of strategic decisions more visible to the capital markets, the need for health care executives to use decision making processes that directly address value creation is vital. This session discusses these issues in the context of current approaches to capital allocation, and how those approaches fall short of addressing value creation. It will define, in some detail, the components and requirements of a more corporate finance-based process that has already been successful at health care organizations nationwide. Specific examples of actual process steps and structure will be provided.
