Learn how Real-Time Location was used to improve specialty bed management, dramatically reducing rental costs

The Need
Using LEAN Six Sigma techniques, Central Sterile Processing and Materials Management leaders at Peninsula Regional Medical Center (PRMC) identified specialty bed management as an area ripe for improvement. They were spending too much time looking for these assets and renting too many specialty beds. Initially, the team focused on streamlining its order form process. They soon realized they were getting better—but at the wrong thing. They still weren’t achieving the desired results.

The Solution
At a workshop hosted by Mark Cornelius, Director of PRMC’s Biomed department, the bed team learned about STANLEY Healthcare’s AeroScout® Real Time Locating System (RTLS) and its capabilities for asset tracking and management, including MobileView dashboards. The Central Sterile Processing and Materials team decided to leverage the solution for specialty bed management. Building on that success, it subsequently extended the capabilities to track wound vacuums and to support its medical (“crash”) cart process.

The Results
Using the STANLEY Healthcare RTLS platform and MobileView software, individual Nursing Units are now able to quickly locate specialty beds that they need for their patients. Consequently, the hospital has virtually eliminated costly rentals, which were averaging $3,500 but often went as high as $6,000 per month. PRMC is also improving the efficiency of care delivery—ensuring that specialty beds and medical carts are available when and where needed. Instead of a “mad rush” to restock medical carts at month’s end, Sterile Processing can easily locate—and restock—carts throughout the month.
