A System of its Own

The Center for Health Ambulatory Surgery Center (CFH) implements a cost effective incident reporting tool tailored to ambulatory outpatient care.

Resource thumbnailIn 2014, The Center for Health Ambulatory Surgery Center, or CFH, moved to RL6 and were up and running in just a few months. Since then, CFH has customized its pick list to capture documentation and medication events, and CFH is using RL6 to track and report money lost on wasted supplies.

CFH is an outpatient ambulatory surgery center in Peoria, Illinois. The surgeons at the CFH perform many types of procedures: general, plastic, gynecology, urology, orthopedics, eye, ENT, gastrointestinal, pain management and oral surgery. The CFH opened in 2001 as a non-profit, hospital-owned freestanding surgery center. In 2007, it became a joint venture owned and operated by OSF Saint Francis Medical Center and four physician groups, under the leadership of Thomas Feldman, Chief Executive Officer.

After the CFH became a joint venture, it continued to use OSF Saint Francis' adverse event tracking system. However, Debra (Debbie) Lee, MSM, RN, CAPA, the CFH's manager of compliance and clinical education, didn't feel it suited the facility's needs. The forms were hospital-focused and didn't fit the type of events the CFH wanted to capture. As well, it was not user-friendly and generating quarterly reports required a great deal of rework. In addition, using OSF Saint Francis' adverse event tracking system meant it was able to review the CFH's occurrence reports and that created some concern.

"We tried using Excel to record events but that did not work. Staff didn't submit reports so we didn't get good data", explains Debbie. The CFH leadership team made a decision to investigate other options. Debbie searched online for other adverse event reporting software and found RL6 from RL Solutions. When the CFH compared OSF Saint Francis' current system to RL6, it was clearly the software the facility was looking for. "I loved the look of RL6. It's very intuitive, easy to use and cost effective," says Debbie.
