For nurses or physicians practicing in any care setting, little is as unsettling as changes associated with the introduction of new information technology (IT). The need for IT has created a new host of challenges that do not easily align to clinical practice. This presentation describes how Arkansas Children’s Hospital (ACH) optimized an IT system in order to maximize the connection between clinicians and the hospital policies and procedures (P&P) that are essential to guiding evidence-based practice.

Policy & Procedure Manager from PolicyTech Uniquely Addresses this Issue
After implementing Policy & Procedure Manager from PolicyTech, ACH’s Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer Lori Brown conducted research to determine what factors influence clinician use of health care IT products. The study was designed to examine clinician perception of IT applications, specifically Policy & Procedure Manager, within the areas of usefulness, ease of use, relevance, complexity and self-efficacy, to more clearly understand what drives intention to use IT. Data includes survey responses of clinicians from three participating hospitals.

You Will Learn To:

  • Identify key factors that influence clinician adoption of IT products
  • Increase ROI of IT-specific investments with a multidisciplinary approach and clinician engagement
  • Utilize search engine functionality within a P&P solution that helps increase staff satisfaction and adoption
  • Improve P&P compliance by removing barriers to “timely access”

Brown and Registered Nurse Karrie Wells explain the constructs to target and why it is important to assess computer use as a precursor to IT implementation -- clinician/staff perception of PolicyTech’s Policy & Procedure Manager are shared. You walk away with the essential targeted interventions to maximize use of this IT product, resulting in improved access to P&Ps for safe, consistent, evidence-based care.
