It is true that HIPAA compliance drives many hospitals’ security and privacy concerns—covering such issues as the accessibility of stored data for use in multiple processes, the security of data for the protection of patients’ privacy, and coding—but these issues go beyond compliance with a federal regulation.  In fact, if HIPAA did not exist, hospitals would want to institute a more secure electronic environment anyway.

By simplifying and streamlining their data, hospitals can increase productivity, reduce costs, and improve patient care. Data security technologies that are most popular today include: disaster recovery; firewalls; user access controls; audit logs; and single sign-on.  Public key infrastructure is far less popular today than other technologies.  Most hospitals today are using more than one data security technology at a time. The path to successful compliance begins with a gap assessment and ends with new (or enhanced) applications, policies, and procedures.
